Having gone through many dramatically life-shifting transitions myself, I am fully aware that transition can feel like standing in the middle of a storm—unsteady, uncertain, and overwhelming. Yet, in my experience, it is also the moment when profound growth and freedom begin. You discover a self you never realized was in there and a lifestyle you may never have thought possible.
In addition to an inner paradigm shift, the key in this process is to find practices that release some of the stress you can have while helping you embrace the beauty of the uncomfortable. Here’s a simple yet powerful framework to guide you:
Ground Yourself Daily: Anchor in the Present Moment. Stress often comes from projecting into the future or clinging to the past. Neither approach allows you to align yourself with the truth of the current moment. The past, through a distorted lens, may appear close to perfect or at least “safe.” The future, through projection, is filled with unknown dangers. Grounding pulls you back to the here and now.
Another possibility is to choose an activity that resonates with you—dancing, yoga, swimming, or a brisk walk. Make it fun and intentional. As you move, imagine shedding the weight of old patterns and beliefs and stepping into a new level of freedom.
During the years of my Institute, we began each day with a grounding exercise to support students in letting go of unfinished conversations from the morning as well as to let go of the traffic from the drive in. Find an exercise that works for you. There are too many to list here. Slow breathing is the simplest of them all…
Emotionally, reframe the discomfort and fears you are experiencing as growth. Ex: breaking out of an eggshell, outgrowing a clothing item, no longer enjoying an activity you used to love. All of these signify growth. This discomfort isn’t a sign of failure; it’s the evidence of stretching into new possibilities. Replace “Why is this happening to me?” with “What is this teaching me or opening up for me?” Know, it opens up all new possibilities.
At this point, you must have had previous transitions. Another time of discomfort that led to a breakthrough in your life. How can you apply that lesson or awareness now? Then, close your eyes and imagine your ideal day in this next stage of your life. How do you feel? What do you do? With whom? Capture the vision in a few sentences. Read it daily to stay focused on the joy and energy waiting on the other side of the transition. It will begin to feel like home.
Importantly, joy doesn’t have to wait for the final big transformation—it’s found in the small moments. What brings you even a small amount of joy today? A favorite song? A quiet cup of tea? A conversation with someone who inspires you? Schedule it if needed, every morning, perhaps?
In closing in this transitionary period, stress and discomfort are not enemies; they’re companions on the path to transformation. By grounding yourself, reframing your perspective, and aligning with your purpose and vision for this stage, you’ll find freedom, energy, and joy—not as distant goals but as daily realities. You’ll also discover energy you didn’t realize you could have when you are purpose driven. When you’re ready for a partner in this process, Call!!!
