The Energy of Leadership is Biological
We often speak about leadership as mindset but...
But… leadership is biological before it is intellectual. Although vision, mission, strategy and emotional intelligence are necessary, they don’t come first.
Your nervous system leads long before your words do.
If your body is chronically braced as if preparing for battle or competition…
If your system is running on cortisol and urgency in a fight or flight mentality – waiting for a shoe to drop or if your breath is shallow and your jaw tight…
You are not leading. You are surviving. Sadly, this is far more common than realized. The vast amount of people out there are in survival - and survival is contagious.
Teams feel it. Families feel it. Clients feel it.
Your energetic state sets the tone long before you speak, in all circumstances.
This is why high performers can suddenly collapse - physically or emotionally. Not because they are weak, but because their physiology has been ignored. Stress is cumulative. It leaves a signature in the body and the cost is high.
I have spent decades studying how belief systems shape stress patterns. Leaders who must control everything tend to carry tension differently than those who over-accommodate. Visionaries burn energy differently than implementers. Organizational leaders suppress energy differently than relational or creative leaders.
Each pattern has strengths and each pattern has vulnerabilities. Consequently, each impacts their health differently. Most importantly, health is not separate from leadership. It is the foundation of leadership.
When you regulate your nervous system, you regulate your influence.
When your body feels safe, your mind becomes creative.
When your energy is coherent, others relax into trust increasing your impact and influence..
This month, ask yourself:
What is my baseline state - calm, pressured, reactive, steady?
Where do you carry stress in my body?
What daily practice would support regulation of your day instead of endurance?
The next evolution of leadership is not more productivity. It is energetic responsibility. Try my Leadership Self-Assessment Tool if you are ready to learn your personal styles and patterns: Here you go.
